Meryl Streep is considered one of the best, if not the best, actresses of the late 20th century.
She lived in an affluent family where her mother was a commercial artist and her father was a company executive.
Streep developed an interest in opera singing and acting while in high school.
As well, she took an active involvement in extra-curricular activities such as cheerleading and swimming.
After completing high school, Streep continued her education in drama and English earning a BA degree from Vassar College in 1971.
She then enrolled at Yale's School of Drama and starred in many productions of the school's Repertory Theater.
By 1975, Meryl Streep had earned her MA in Drama from Yale and moved to New York to embark on a professional career as an actress.
She worked with John Cazale in Shakespeare in the Park productions and then with John Lithgow on Broadway.
Streep became engaged to Cazale but during the engagement period, Cazale died from bone cancer.
By 1978, Streep had appeared in films and attained her first Academy Award nomination for the movie The Deer Hunter.
In the same year, she also won her first Emmy award for Outstanding Actress in the miniseries Holocaust.
Over the years, Streep has also helped in numerous causes and charitable events including being an activist for the environment.
Meryl Streep has continued to be an outstanding actress and has been nominated for at least 14 Academy Awards.
